julie is a junkie…

In setting up this blog page for my uni course in Australian Literature I had to pick a username. Every name I tried was taken so when this song came on my Spotify playlist at 3am I typed it in and voila, here I am.

Julie Is A Junkie is a ridiculously catchy tune by the legendary 80’s Aussie punk rock band The Eastern Dark. It is one of my all time favourite songs, so I was a little starstruck when i met band member Bill Gibson (who also played in The Lemonheads!) at a Front End Loader gig last year. And as my name just happens to be Julie I thought hell yeah!

However, some well meaning people were not impressed with my cool new username. They said it might imply that I am indeed a junkie and it could give the wrong impression. I was devo… people thinking I take drugs, oh the horror. I started thinking of new usernames.

Then I got out my Macquarie Dictionary and looked up junkie.

junkie n. colloq. 1. a drug addict. 2. a person who is enthusiastic about something specified: a sci-fi junkie.

Aha! Being a junkie isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The gym junkies, the adrenaline junkies, Christian, adventure, screen, love, endorphin junkies, they revel in their junkie status. Well I certainly wouldn’t qualify as any of those. Is there anything I am so extremely enthusiastic about that could result in me being labelled a junkie? A book junkie?… Maybe. A chocolate junkie? A Married at First Sight junkie? Nope, I can’t think of anything right now. I’ll ask my dealer tomorrow.

I don’t know why I love her but I do I just know that it’s true RIP James Darroch
